On life and its vagaries

Empty dwellings

with 10 comments

You know

It’s sad to chance upon empty houses-

Or desolate structures  ………..

It makes me shudder

And I ache for those  who keep them

They stand forlorn

Lost in their hidden miseries

Their togetherness having little significance

Very dead at heart and

No life-force moving within…….

Yet when a strong wind stirs

They seem to awaken into-

Some sort of gruesome life

As if in a cataleptic trance of the dead-

And trembles into being……..

Pane-less windows howling,

Doors creaking loud on rusty hinges-

Shutting themselves in and out…..

Loosened boards and hanging bits

Of drains thudding and neighing

Into our hearts, the dust streaming

Out in strange phantom dances

Torn ribbons of cloth, paper, and plastic

Hissing frantically……….

But it’s only for a moment

Then they bend back to their reality

Jutting mutely into the backdrop

As mere carcasses of futile industry

Saddening us……….
