On life and its vagaries

You Are That

with 2 comments

This is the time people visit the famous Temple at Sabarimala. It is a small temple. With an Idol and an inscription of “Tat Tvam Asi” (thou art that) above the sanctum sanctorum. Some go through 41 days of penance or purification before going there. There is dress code and some rituals to complete the pilgrimage.

But I wonder whether anybody looks at the inscription above the temple door. These few lines are about that.

You Are That

When they come to see me

Come prepared

Invariably there is

The chain of beads

The black cloths

The brain like bundle on the heads

‘We rely on you, Lord’ they shout

“We have come to see you’

They wail, cry and often

Are in a frenzy

They sleep on ground

And go on repeating my names

They are sure that

I can help them

Vainly do I say

Look within

Don’t go climbing hills

Don’t cry yourself hoarse

They read the inscription “you are that”

But still go on shouting

“Lord, save us, saves us lord”

Can I save you from yourselves?

“We have covered the eighteen steps

We have done penances

We haven’t had a drop of spirit”

(I laugh at that, Spirit indeed)

This is an amusing game

Ever running away from me

Never finding me within

Well do they ever want to know that even!
