On life and its vagaries

Love dissected

There is nothing of mine in this story. Not even words. So credit everything good in it to their original authors and everything worse to me. But it speaks about the greatest of all truths,  if only we can understand it.

Some might call it Pantheism; well there is that of course.

Love dissected

The sage Yaanjnavalkya was about to leave for his fourth and final ashram the Vaanaprastha. He called  his wife to him and told her:

“Maitreyi here is all my money and

What I have gathered in life,

Keep yourself well with it

I have to leave for the forest now”

She then  is said to have  asked him:

“If I had the all the wealth in the world

Would it give me immortality?”

Yaajnavalkya considered:

“You will only be rich then, that’s all,

What has money to do with immortality?”

“Then bequeath that to me instead” she said.

The sage thought for a moment and said:

“You have become more beloved to me

Now with this one question, so sit by me

And meditate on it when you have heard it all”

He then began to instruct her on truth:

“It is not for the sake of husband that the wife

Loves the husband but for the sake of the self,

Likewise it is not for the sake of wife that the

Husband loves the wife but for the sake of the self

As you can see, we love our children, people

Gods or things for the sake of the self

Rather than for anything else…..

So maitreyi, this Self, therefore, is to be heard, reasoned out, and meditated upon ……….

When that Self has been heard,

When that Self has been seen,

When that Self has been realized,

Then, all this becomes known.”
